Remarks
Originally described as Orthis penelope by Hall in 1860, recombined into Rhipidomella penelope by Hall and Clarke in 1892.
From Wilson (2014, p. 96): “Large shell, with width greater than length. Brachial valve convex; pedicle valve flat or slightly concave. To 20-40mm.”
From Carlton Brett and Gordon Baird: “This large orthid is typical of shallow calcareous facies of the Hamilton Group and its equivalents belonging to the shallow, clean water Pseudoatrypa-Megastrophia - biofacies of Brett et al (2007).; it is generally less common than the smaller R. vanuxemi and occurs in shallower water carbonates. There are notable abundance peaks for example in the diverse facies of the Darien Center Submember of the lower Wanakah Shale as well as in the Tichenor limestone. In one of its abundant occurrences in the lower Wanakah Shale R. penelope shows apparent bite marks. It first appears with the Hamilton fauna but is probably derived from Eastern America Realm stocks.”
