Remarks
Originally described as Orthis leucosia by Hall in 1860. According to Hall, this species is very similar to Rhipidomella vanuxemi, and may perhaps prove only a variety of that species. It can be distinguished from R. vanuxemi by its more ovate shape, less rounded cardinal extremities, and more gibbous dorsal valve, among other characteristics.
From Carlton Brett and Gordon Baird: “Generally an uncommon species of Rhipidomella, R. leucosia is often the dominant form in the lower Skaneateles Mottville Member. It tends to occur with high diversity brachiopod assemblages including related species R. vanuxemi and R. penelope.”
