Remarks
Originally described as Strophomena perplana by Conrad in 1842. Recombined as Strophodonta perplana by Hall in 1867. Recombined as Leptostrophia perplana by Clarke in 1903. Recombined as Protoleptostrophia perplana by Caster in 1939.
From Wilson (2014, p. 100): “Small to medium-sized shell, slightly convex to nearly flat. End of hinge line usually elongated to a fine point. Surface with very fine striae and growth lines. To 20-40 mm.”
From Carlton Brett and Gordon Baird: “An extraordinarily flat thin shelled form, this brachiopod is an Eastern America Realm taxon common in medium dark shales, as well as limestones in the Eifelian siltstones nearshore sandstones in the Eifelian to Givetian of the Appalachian Basin and midcontinent. In this case having a minimalist strategy seems to have enabled this brachiopod to be a widespread generalist in its ecology.”
