Remarks
From Hall (1867, p. 291): “This species differs from A. spiriferoides in the character of the mesial fold and sinus, in the proportional greater convexity of the ventral valve, and greater elevation of the umbo.”
Specimens of A. cora are typically both smaller and more robustly biconvex than A. spiriferoides. Athyris cora is typically of the lower Hamilton Group whereas A. spiriferoides is especially prominent in the Ludlowville Formation. Athyris vitata and A. fultonensis of the lower Givetian North Vernon and Delaware Formation in Ohio and Indiana are very similar to A. cora and are suspected synonyms. A very similar form occurs in the Genshaw formation of Michigan Basin.
