Remarks
From Wilson (2014, p. 112): “Small shell, with strongly convex. Pedicle valve almost hemispherical with distinct sinus, brachial valve flat. To 5-10mm.”
Originally described as Orthis umbonata by Conrad in 1842, recombined as Ambocoelia umbonata by James Hall in 1860.
Ambocoelia umbonata is one of the most abundant and long ranging of Devonian brachiopods. Clearly part of the Eastern America Realm. This small spiriferid occurs in extreme abundance often in low diversity pavements and pods in deep water facies but is generally absent in shallower settings. The species occurs not only in the Appalachian Basin but also in parts of the Silica Shale in northern Ohio and as dense clusters in the midde Beechwood and Boyle formations in Indiana and Kentucky; it is commonly associated with small chonetid brachiopods such as Arcuaminetes and Longispina and is an eponymous taxon of the Ambocoelia-Chonetid biofacies of Brett et al. (2007).
